京都・祇園を代表する名社で、古くは祇園社と呼ばれた全国祇園社の総本社。社伝では創祀は斉明天皇2年（656）にさかのぼるとされ、祇園祭の祭礼神社としても全国的に有名です。四条通の東端に立つ西楼門の印象が強く、京都らしい華やかさと歴史の厚みを感じられる一社。主祭神の素戔嗚尊にちなむ厄除けの信仰で知られるほか、境内の大国主社は縁結び、美御前社は美容祈願でも人気が高く、観光と参拝の両面で非常に訪れやすい神社です。
